Within days after the mass shooting on Oct. 1, more than a thousand people shoveled dirt, painted rocks and planted 58 trees on land donated by the city to form the Las Vegas Community Healing Garden. Artist Bobby Jacobs was chosen to create a pair of bluestone angel wing sculptures carved with the initials of the 58 victims, to be dedicated to the garden on the first anniversary of the mass shooting. The effort is part of the Spread Your Wings Project (thespreadyourwingsproject.org) that created the Wings Across America campaign, during which 100 percent of art and merchandise profits will be donated to keep the garden intact. “The wings are called ‘Love and Courage’ because when this tragedy happened, there was an incredible outpouring of love to the survivors,” says Jacobs. “It’s love from others that gives us the courage to carry on.” –Emmy Kasten
